The ADAPT All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) has created a free linguistics Transition Year (TY) module for secondary schools. The module was funded by Post-Primary Languages Ireland (PPLI). It was developed by AILO with AILO teachers and ADAPT researchers, and is designed as teacher-led online resources, hosted at https://ppli.ie/transition-year-linguistics-module/.
An information session (recording available) was held on 23rd May 2022. We will run a further session for teachers at 7pm 15th September 2022. Please register for module information to receive Zoom details. We will post a recording of the session here.
To receive information on the module (and be able to receive completion certs etc.) register your interest in the module by adding your school details at this link.
Every school / school year on the island (and further afield!) is welcome to use the materials how and where they can in their classes.
The module consists of 10 topics covering linguistics topics such as phonetics, writing systems and language acquisition. The module uses AILO puzzles so that students can get hands-on experience of linguistic problem-solving. ADAPT researchers from Dublin City University and NUI Galway are providing their expertise in Machine Translation and Historical Linguistics.
